TEE Probe Inspection Standards: A Buyer's Guide for Used Philips & GE Transesophageal Echo Probes
Transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) probes are high-value, repair-grade ultrasound assets. This guide walks parts buyers, biomedical repair shops and international resellers through the inspection checks we run on every used Philips and GE TEE probe before listing it for export.
Why TEE probes need a dedicated inspection
Unlike surface probes, TEE probes spend their working life inside the patient's esophagus. A bite mark, pinhole or cracked lens that would be cosmetic on a linear probe becomes a patient-safety and HV-leakage issue on a TEE. Combined with replacement costs of US$20,000–60,000+ per probe, this is why every reputable parts dealer publishes an inspection standard — and why buyers should insist on seeing one.

The 6-point TEE probe inspection checklist
Use this checklist when evaluating any used Philips X7-2t, X8-2t, S7-3t, S8-3t or GE 6Tc, 9T, 6VT-D, or similar TEE probe before purchase.
1. Connector & contact pins
Bent, recessed, oxidized or missing pins are the most common cause of image dropout. Inspect under magnification; photograph the connector face. For Philips xMATRIX connectors, confirm there is no green corrosion on the locking ring or shell.
2. Bite marks & shaft jacket integrity
Run a gloved finger along the full insertion length. Any breach of the outer polymer jacket — bite indentations, splits, lifted seams — is a hard fail for clinical resale and a price-driver for parts buyers. Note location in centimeters from the distal tip.
3. Lens, transducer face & matching layer
Look for delamination, scratches, bubbles or chemical hazing on the acoustic lens. Even a hairline crack will leak gel/saline into the array and end the probe's clinical life. This is the single highest-impact line item on the inspection.
4. Articulation controls (flex/lateral wheels)
Cycle anteflexion, retroflexion and left/right wheels through full travel. Confirm the brake/lock holds. Stiff, gritty or free-spinning controls indicate cable stretch or pulley wear inside the handle.
5. Electrical safety & leakage
When test equipment is available, run an IEC 60601 patient-applied parts leakage test. For parts-grade resale, document whether the probe was previously tagged as failing leakage at the originating facility.
6. Console image test — every element
Plug the probe into a compatible Philips iE33, EPIQ, CX50 or GE Vivid system and acquire a 2D phantom or hand image. Sweep through every available preset. Black or dropout columns indicate dead elements; a count of how many is the single most important number for a repair-shop buyer.
Philips vs GE TEE probes: what to watch for
Philips (X7-2t, X8-2t, S7-3t)
- xMATRIX connectors are sensitive to bent pins — inspect under light.
- Confirm probe is unlocked from its previous host system before testing.
- Distal tip lens is glued, not mechanically fastened — any seam lift is terminal.
GE (6Tc, 9T, 6VT-D)
- DLP/DLN connectors — check the latch tabs and the foam gasket inside the shell.
- Articulation brake wear is common; verify the brake holds at full anteflexion.
- 6VT-D 4D probes carry motor assemblies — listen for grinding during sweep.
Reading a parts-grade probe listing
When you review a used TEE probe listed for export, you should be able to answer all of the following from the photos and description before requesting a quote:
- Manufacturer, model and full serial number
- Reported condition: working / dead elements / bite damage / leakage failure / cosmetic only
- Connector type and clear photo of the pin face
- Number of dead elements (if image-tested) or "untested" if not
- Whether the probe is locked to a previous host system
- Whether the originating facility tagged it for retirement and why
If any of these are missing, ask. A reputable export seller will answer in writing.
